Residential systems can count on a quite swift procedure with minor and relatively few barriers in the installation process, as it takes between 2 and 4 weeks to complete the whole process.

Notifying the Local Authority

There is no need to give a building notice to the local authority before installing the PV system, provided the PV system is installed by a competent authority as defined in schedule 3 of the Buildings Regulations. However, since they constitute domestic electrical work, PV systems shall be notified to the Local Authority under part P of the Building regulations (electrical safety). The notification can be carried out by the competent person once the solar PV panel has been installed. The installer notifies the certification body which gave them their 'competent person' accreditation, and it is the role of the certification body to inform the Local Authorities of any new installations in that area.
