The latest estimations (November 2013) of the amount of installed PV power in the UK by the Department of Energy and Climate Change indicated that there are about 2.6 GW of installed PV capacity in operation, mainly concentrated in the residential and commercial market segment. Residential systems can count on a quite swift procedure with minor and relatively few barriers in the installation process, as it takes between 2 and 4 weeks to complete the whole process.

A new housing development on a greenfield site

If solar PV installations are to be installed as a part of a new 'housing or commercial green field development', they will need to be identified as a part of the overall scheme power requirements design. This needs to be carried out in accordance with the Electricity Network Association G81 framework which covers design, planning, materials specification and installation for Greenfield low voltage housing estate installations and associated, new, High Voltage /Low Voltage distribution substations.
